Danyèl Waro
Born in 1955 in Saint-Pierre on the island of La Réunion, Danyèl Waro has established himself as one of the key figures in the revival of maloya, which he has developed since the early 1980s around an acoustic practice focused on voice, choirs and traditional percussion. Danyèl Waro sings in Réunion Creole texts that are both intimate and political, nourished by the history of slavery, contemporary social realities and questions of identity, blending slow laments, trance chants and forms close to the blues. Marked by an imprisonment in the late 1970s for refusing military service, he frames his artistic work within a committed, collective approach, leading maloya ensembles on the island and performing regularly on stages across Europe and the Indian Ocean. His albums Aou Amwin? (1994), Batarsité (1999), Bwarouz (2002), Tinn Tout (2010) and Monmon (2017) gradually positioned Danyèl Waro within the international world-music circuit, while remaining rooted in the raw sounds of the roulèr, the kayamb and call-and-response singing. A poet as much as a singer, he treats his texts as an extension of everyday speech, giving maloya a distinctive place in the francophone musical landscape and beyond.
