Markus Nikolaus

Based in Berlin, Markus Nikolaus develops a style of writing that sits between post‑punk, dark pop and electronic music. He first appeared as part of Lea Porcelain, a duo he founded with producer Julien Bracht, where his vocals and lyrics inhabit songs with clear melodic structures, marked by cold textures, slow rhythms and a nocturnal atmosphere. The project emerged with the single "Out Is In", played by Zane Lowe on Apple Music, and then toured European stages, including dates alongside Apparat and alt‑J. During the pandemic Markus Nikolaus began writing at Berlin’s Funkhaus and shifted his approach toward a more psychedelic and brighter register, while retaining an introspective dimension. As a solo artist he carries forward certain traits of Lea Porcelain, moving them toward a more flexible alternative pop in which electronics, guitars and vocal lines coexist in a more direct format, as illustrated by the tracks "Bicycle Day" and "Hold Me Close". Markus Nikolaus thus belongs to a Berlin scene where atmospheric rock, synth‑pop and alternative song intersect.
