Regensburger Domspatzen
Attached to St. Peter’s Cathedral in Regensburg, Bavaria, the Regensburger Domspatzen belong to a tradition dating back to 975, when Bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg founded a cathedral school. This German ensemble of boys’ and young men’s voices originally served the liturgy while developing a concert and recording activity that has firmly established it in the European choral landscape. The Regensburger Domspatzen’s repertoire focuses on sacred music, choral polyphony and the great baroque works, with a prominent place for Bach, Schütz and Handel. In the 20th century the choir’s development was marked by Theobald Schrems and later Georg Ratzinger, followed by the directions of Roland Büchner and, since 2019, Christian Heiß. Their activity alternates between cathedral services, tours in Germany and abroad, and numerous recordings. The ensemble’s sound rests on a balance of clear lines, sectional homogeneity and the tradition of German church singing, in an approach that links religious practice with concert interpretation.
