Elvis Crespo
Born in New York in 1971 and raised in Puerto Rico, Elvis Crespo emerged in the tropical music scene in the 1990s as a leading merengue singer. After performing with various local groups, he joined the Puerto Rican ensemble Grupo Manía, becoming one of its standout voices before launching a solo career in 1998. His debut album Suavemente (1998) quickly established him on Latin dance floors with fast merengue driven by brass and romantic lyrics, followed by Píntame (1999) and Wow! Flash (2000), which extended this blend of Dominican rhythms and Caribbean pop. Crespo broadened his palette with Urbano (2002) and Saboréalo (2004), where merengue interacted more with salsa, cumbia and urban influences. With Regresó el Jefe (2007), Indestructible (2010) and Los Monsters (2012) he consolidated a dance-oriented identity, collaborating with other Latin artists and performing regularly across the United States, Puerto Rico and Latin America. Elvis Crespo’s style remains centered on energetic, melodic merengue crafted for the stage, alternating between festive numbers and tropical ballads.
