Big Big Train

Born in the early 1990s in Bournemouth, in the south of England, Big Big Train sits within the British progressive rock tradition, blending extended structures, detailed vocal melodies and narratives inspired by social history and industrial or rural landscapes. Founded by composer and bassist Gregory Spawton with Andy Poole, the band released its debut album, “Goodbye to the Age of Steam”, in 1994 and gradually refined its language with “English Boy Wonders” (1997) and “Bard” (2002) before taking a more pronounced turn with “The Difference Machine” (2007). The arrival of singer David Longdon and instrumentalists such as Nick D’Virgilio and Dave Gregory led to “The Underfall Yard” (2009) and the diptych “English Electric” (2012–2013), which positioned Big Big Train in a symphonic register rich in brass and string arrangements, at times close to folk rock and classic rock. Long primarily focused on studio work for many years, the band shifted more toward the stage from the mid-2010s, playing concerts in England and at several progressive rock festivals in Europe and North America, while maintaining a steady release schedule with “Folklore” (2016), “Grand Tour” (2019), “Common Ground” (2021), “Welcome to the Planet” (2022) and “The Likes of Us” (2024). After David Longdon’s death in 2021, Big Big Train continued around Gregory Spawton, incorporating Italian singer Alberto Bravin and operating as a variable-geometry ensemble of British and international musicians, with a sound that remains centered on storytelling, keyboard textures, melodic guitars and a progressive, song-oriented approach.
