Ruthie Foster
Born in Gause, Texas, Ruthie Foster grew up in a musical tradition shaped early on by family gospel, later expanding her range to blues, soul, folk and jazz inflections. After studying music and sound engineering in Waco, she played in Texas blues bands and then joined the U.S. Navy, where she sang in an ensemble performing pop and funk. Settling in New York, she participated in the local folk scene before returning to Texas in the mid-1990s. Foster began her recorded output with Full Circle in 1997, followed by Crossover (1999) and Runaway Soul (2002), establishing a songwriting approach rooted in American musical traditions. Over the years her repertoire has alternated between acoustic formats, restrained electric blues and gospel-tinged soul, as on The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (2009), Let It Burn (2012), Promise of a Brand New Day (2014), Joy Comes Back (2017), Healing Time (2022) and Mileage (2024). She has also collaborated with artists such as the Blind Boys of Alabama, William Bell, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, and remains connected to the American blues, folk and roots scenes.
