Federale
In Portland, Oregon, Federale is built around bassist and composer Collin Hegna, also known from The Brian Jonestown Massacre, with the aim of exploring cinematic western music infused with psychedelic rock and Americana. Formed in the mid-2000s, the group operates as a collective with a rotating lineup, bringing together multiple singers and instrumentalists around expansive vocal arrangements, brass, reverb-drenched guitars and slow percussion, in an aesthetic inspired by Italian western soundtracks. Across albums and film scores, Federale has honed a film-like compositional approach, based on recurring themes, dark atmospheres and a taste for narratives without dialogue. Their pieces alternate between elongated instrumentals, dramatic songs and quasi-choral numbers, often centered on stories of flight, revenge or the frontier. Regularly present on the indie scene and in repertory cinemas, some of their tracks have been incorporated into audiovisual projects, while more recent releases such as the single "Blood Moon" extend this modern, imaginary western approach.
