Matt Minglewood

Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, under the name Roy Alexander Batherson and settled very early in Nova Scotia, Matt Minglewood since the late 1960s has developed a repertoire spanning country, blues, rock, folk, and roots music, with a rough vocal style and a guitar playing anchored in North American traditions. After beginnings in local groups such as The Rockin’ Saints, then with Sam Moon, Matt Minglewood & The Universal Power, Moon-Minglewood and Pepper Tree, Matt Minglewood founded The Minglewood Band in 1974. The group toured widely in Canada and released several albums, including Minglewood Band (1975), Minglewood Band (1979), Movin’ (1980), Out on a Limb (1981), M5 (1982) and Smokers (1984). From the mid-1980s, Matt Minglewood pursued a solo career with Me and the Boys (1986), then The Promise (1988), occasionally emphasizing the country dimension of his writing while not straying from the blues-rock that shapes his career. Based in Glace Bay and long associated with the Maritime scene, Matt Minglewood remains a regular name on Eastern Canadian venues and festivals. His discography also includes Drivin’ Wheel (1999), Live at Last (2003), The Story (2005) and Fly Like Desperados (2017).
