BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Based in Glasgow and founded in 1935 by the BBC, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra occupies a distinctive place in Scottish musical life as the country’s first permanent professional orchestra created for broadcasting. Initially formed under the name BBC Scottish Orchestra, the ensemble long centered its activities on studio concerts and live broadcasts, before gradually expanding its public presence in Scotland, the United Kingdom, and internationally. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra works across the symphonic repertoire, concertante music, and contemporary creation, with a constant emphasis on Scottish composers and works from the 20th and 21st centuries. This orientation was evident from the Norman Del Mar era and continued under conductors such as Osmo Vänskä, Ilan Volkov, Donald Runnicles, Thomas Dausgaard, and Ryan Wigglesworth, who has served as chief conductor since 2022. Today based at the Glasgow City Halls, the orchestra regularly performs at the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Its discographic journey, documented on several labels, accompanies an activity marked both by the great orchestral repertoire and by advocacy of new music.
