BBC Concert Orchestra
Based in London, the BBC Concert Orchestra is part of the history of BBC radio ensembles, with a lineage tracing back to the BBC Theatre Orchestra founded in 1931, which became the BBC Opera Orchestra in 1949, before adopting its current name in 1952. Comprising around fifty musicians, the BBC Concert Orchestra occupies a distinctive place in the British landscape between a classical orchestra, a concert ensemble and a studio ensemble. Its repertoire covers light symphonic music, musical theatre, opera, operetta, orchestral jazz, film music, and certain forms of pop arranged for orchestra, in a flexible aesthetic suited to radio broadcasting. The BBC Concert Orchestra has long been associated with the Friday Night Is Music Night program on BBC Radio 3 and performs regularly at the Proms, the Royal Festival Hall, and other venues across the United Kingdom. Over its career it has been led by conductors such as Charles Mackerras, Vilém Tauský, Barry Wordsworth, Keith Lockhart, and Bramwell Tovey. Since 2023, the musical direction has been led by Anna-Maria Helsing. The BBC Concert Orchestra has also developed ties with composers and arrangers from diverse backgrounds, including Jonny Greenwood, Guy Barker, and Dobrinka Tabakova, reflecting the orchestra's ongoing openness to multiple formats and writing styles.
