Randy Hansen

Randy Hansen, a rock guitarist born in 1954 in Seattle (United States), established himself in the late 1970s on the American West Coast with a repertoire centered on the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. With his band Machine Gun, formed in Seattle in 1977, Hansen played numerous concerts blending faithful covers, extended improvisations and original compositions, in a style ranging from psychedelic rock to hard rock and blues rock. His intensive stage activity led to an invitation to contribute to the soundtrack of Francis Ford Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now, which helped secure his place in the rock landscape. His first eponymous studio album was released in 1980 on Capitol Records, translating the live aesthetic to record with heavy riffs, funk-leaning passages and electric ballads. Thereafter Hansen focused largely on live performance, touring the United States and Europe, notably Germany, where he presented shows heavily grounded in Hendrix’s repertoire while retaining room for his own songs. His playing is marked by careful attention to tone, a strong use of improvisation and constant interaction with the audience and fellow musicians — elements that have shaped Randy Hansen’s artistic identity for decades.
