Grateful Shred
Based in Los Angeles, Grateful Shred formed from musicians of the California scene around a repertoire centered on the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band. Their material is reworked into a style that mixes American rock, country rock, psychedelic folk, jam-band sensibilities and prominent vocal harmonies. The group operates as a collective led chiefly by Dan Horne and Austin McCutchen, with lineups that may include Adam MacDougall, John Lee Shannon, Mikaela Davis and Corey Rose, balancing communal singing, fluid guitar work and extended improvisational passages. Grateful Shred began to circulate more widely in the late 2010s after informal shows within the Grateful Dead fan ecosystem in Los Angeles and went on to tour the United States. Their first studio album, Might As Well, was released in 2025 on Liberty Hair Farm Records and gathers songs associated with the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band that had not previously received proper studio versions, here revisited with a brighter, country-soul, relaxed tone. In parallel, Grateful Shred also issues concert recordings in the Dan’s Dubs series, extending an identity built as much on stage as in the studio.
