Zeus
At the heart of Canada’s independent rock scene, Zeus stands out as a Toronto band whose aesthetic draws on the classic rock of the 1960s and ’70s while remaining rooted in contemporary indie. Formed around Carlin Nicholson, Mike O’Brien, and Neil Quin, and joined by drummer Rob Drake, Zeus first developed as Jason Collett’s touring and studio band before signing to Arts & Crafts and focusing on their own material. The 2009 EP Sounds Like Zeus and the 2010 album Say Us established a songwriting approach that blends melodic guitars, warm keyboards, and tight vocal harmonies, in a power-pop vein steeped in studio craft. With 2012’s Busting Visions, Zeus broadened the palette toward denser, more psychedelic rock, while 2014’s Classic Zeus refined a more direct sound centered on songs and vocal arrangements. The 2019 release The Line marked a more introspective phase, where Zeus embraced more subdued textures and often more restrained tempos while preserving the primacy of melody and harmonies. Active on stages across North America and Europe, Zeus situates itself in the lineage of arrangement-rich, studio-shaped rock, nourished by vintage references yet forged with a modern indie sensibility.
