Gurdas Maan
Singer, songwriter and actor from Giddarbaha in the Indian state of Punjab, Gurdas Maan rose to prominence in the early 1980s on Indian public television with the song “Dil Da Mamla Hai”, which firmly established him on the Punjabi music scene. He developed a repertoire mainly in Punjabi, at the crossroads of regional folk, bhangra and melodic pop, incorporating contemporary arrangements while remaining rooted in traditional vocal forms. His lyrics, which he very often writes himself, address rural life, migration, family ties and spiritual themes, giving his work a strong narrative dimension. Over the decades Gurdas Maan has released studio albums, soundtracks and singles, while extensively touring India, the United Kingdom and North America, where he regularly performs for diaspora communities. Alongside his singing career, he has taken notable roles in Punjabi cinema, notably in films such as “Shaheed-E-Mohabbat Boota Singh”, “Des Hoyaa Pardes” and “Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris”, where he extends his engagement with Punjab’s history and culture. This dual trajectory between popular music and regional cinema places Gurdas Maan at the heart of a constantly evolving Punjabi cultural landscape.
