Converge
Formed in the early 1990s in the Boston area, American band Converge emerged from the hardcore and metal scene in Salem, Massachusetts, centered on vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou. From its earliest releases, Converge developed a musical language that blends hardcore punk, extreme metal and fractured rhythmic structures, with a marked taste for dissonance and abrupt tempo changes. After a self-produced debut, Halo in a Haystack (1994), the band drew attention with Petitioning the Empty Sky (1996) and When Forever Comes Crashing (1998), which anchored Converge in the American metalcore revival. The release of Jane Doe in 2001 was a pivotal moment, pushing further the combination of sonic violence, fragmented melodies and introspective lyrics. Converge then followed with You Fail Me (2004), No Heroes (2006) and Axe to Fall (2009), gradually expanding their palette toward more atmospheric moods while remaining rooted in an abrasive aesthetic. All We Love We Leave Behind (2012) and The Dusk in Us (2017) confirmed this mix of hardcore, metal and post-rock influences, while Bloodmoon: I (2021), made with Chelsea Wolfe and close collaborators, explored slower tempos, darker textures and more developed vocal arrangements. Active on independent scenes in the U.S. and Europe, Converge remains associated with an intense, dense and often chaotic sound, driven by precise rhythm work and highly textured guitar playing.
