Ana Lua Caiano

Born in Lisbon in 1999, Ana Lua Caiano has since the early 2020s developed a solo project at the crossroads of Portuguese popular music, electronics and a pop-writing with inflections sometimes close to hip-hop. Trained very early on piano, she studied voice and jazz and then several groups before turning to solitary composition. Ana Lua Caiano builds music of vocal layers, percussion and melodic motifs where traditional Portuguese references dialogue with contemporary textures and everyday sounds. This approach takes shape on the EP Cheguei Tarde a Ontem in 2022, then on Se Dançar É Só Depois in 2023, two releases that accompany her emergence on Portuguese stages and at festivals attentive to hybrid forms. In 2024, Ana Lua Caiano publishes her first album Vou Ficar Neste Quadrado, which extends this work of assembling folklore, chanson and electronic production in a more developed format. Alone on stage, Ana Lua Caiano evolves her compositions like a one-woman band, with a very direct relation to voice, rhythm and repetition, in an aesthetic that is at once stripped-down, ritual and very anchored in the present.
