Fortunate Ones
Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Fortunate Ones is a folk duo comprising singer‑songwriters Andrew James O’Brien and Catherine Allan. Rooted in the contemporary North American folk and indie folk scenes, the project pursues an acoustic palette focused on vocal harmonies, guitars, and narrative songwriting inspired by Atlantic landscapes, intimate relationships, and life on tour. After early musical endeavors on their own, O’Brien and Allan began performing together in the early 2010s—first on local stages in St. John’s and then across Canada—playing clubs, midsize venues, and folk festivals. Fortunate Ones’ career revolves around three studio albums—The Bliss (2015), Hold Fast (2018), and That Was You and Me (2022)—which trace a gradual shift toward more elaborately arranged writing, incorporating elements of indie pop while remaining grounded in folk tradition. The duo tours extensively throughout the Atlantic provinces and the rest of the country, engaging with Canadian songwriter networks and international folk circuits, alternating between intimate duo shows and expanded lineups depending on the setting.
