Tony Ann
Canadian pianist and composer Tony Ann develops work centered on solo piano at the crossroads of contemporary classical music, neoclassical and instrumental pop. Trained notably at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Tony Ann came to prominence from the second half of the 2010s through videos of his compositions and reinterpretations of popular songs shared on social media, gradually establishing his sonic signature. His style relies on simple melodic motifs stretched across harmonic progressions that lean toward pop, a highly articulated right-hand technique and a pronounced use of dynamics to create a writing with cinematic accents. Alongside his solo activity, Tony Ann collaborates with the electronic duo The Chainsmokers, performing with them on stage and in the studio, which also places him in a more electronic, song-oriented context. Drawing on these experiences, he regularly releases original pieces as singles and instrumental EPs—sometimes as thematic cycles around emotions or colors, sometimes as standalone pieces conceived for concert performance. His career has since been built around solo piano tours in North America, Europe and Asia, where he presents this repertoire live, mixing it with arrangements of recent pop songs in an aesthetic that seeks to link classical language, online culture and contemporary music formats.
