Art Hirahara

American pianist and composer Art Hirahara, born in 1971, is part of the contemporary jazz scene, with a career split between the San Francisco Bay Area and New York, where he has been active since 2003. Trained at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the California Institute of the Arts, Hirahara has developed a compositional voice that links the language of the jazz trio and quartet to broader references—from the avant-garde to certain West African traditions and Balinese gamelan. After his debut album Edge of This Earth (2000), he released Noble Path (2011), Libations & Meditations (2015), Central Line (2017), Sunward Bound (2018), Balance Point (2020), Open Sky (2021) and Good Company (2024). His discography features varied lineups, from trio to quartet, with collaborators such as Linda May Han Oh, Rudy Royston, Donny McCaslin, Melissa Aldana and Nicole Glover. Alongside his projects as a leader, Hirahara has also performed as a sideman with Akira Tana, Don Braden, Behn Gillece and Sean Nowell, which highlights his place on the New York jazz scene since the 2000s.
