Artful
Under the name Artful, Mark Hill has since the 2010s pursued a solo path anchored in house, British garage, soul, and R&B, after first establishing himself in the UK as part of Artful Dodger. Born in Cwmbran, Wales, and later active notably in Southampton and Ibiza, Mark Hill comes from a milieu where club culture, pop writing, and dance production intersect. In the late 1990s, he formed the duo Artful Dodger with Pete Devereux, associated with the rise of UK garage, with tracks such as Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta), Movin’ Too Fast, and Woman Trouble, as well as the 2000 album It’s All About the Stragglers. In parallel, Mark Hill co-wrote and co-produced Craig David’s Born to Do It, also released in 2000. After this initial period, Artful took a more personal direction, where house and 2-step structures opened up to more soulful arrangements, varied tempos, and a more melodic approach. Under the Artful name, Mark Hill released the EP Unfinished Business in 2013 and also developed joint projects with Ridney. His trajectory thus links late-1990s UK garage to a club music that is more flexible, nourished by soul vocals, house grooves, and writing drawn from British pop.
