Antimatter

Formed in Liverpool in 1998, Antimatter emerged from the meeting of Mick Moss and Duncan Patterson, the latter a former bassist of Anathema. Initially a duo, they each composed separately and later assembled the tracks in the studio. Antimatter’s early records—Saviour (2001), Lights Out (2003) and Planetary Confinement (2005)—established an aesthetic at the intersection of dark rock, progressive rock, ambient and a then-still-prominent melancholic trip hop, with a notable emphasis on female voices and spare arrangements. After Patterson left in 2005, Antimatter became Mick Moss’s primary project; he gradually steered the sound toward more personal songwriting, blending acoustic and electric guitars, dark textures and influences from folk, alternative and darkwave. This evolution is evident on Leaving Eden (2007), Fear of a Unique Identity (2012), The Judas Table (2015) and Black Market Enlightenment (2018). On stage, Antimatter has alternated between acoustic formats, full-band lineups and more orchestrated configurations, regularly appearing on progressive, gothic and alternative stages across Europe. From the start, Antimatter has maintained an identity built on introspective compositions, often restrained tempos and a strong focus on atmosphere.
