Charlélie Couture
Born in 1956 in Nancy, Charlélie Couture initially trained in the visual arts before establishing himself on the French music scene with a repertoire that blends rock, blues, chanson and spoken word. His early albums at the turn of the 1980s introduced a writing style strongly marked by observations of everyday life, a taste for urban atmospheres and a particular attention to sonic textures, often close to the new wave rock of the period. Over the decades, his discography alternates between electric line-ups and more acoustic projects, solo or with tight-knit bands, including studio records, live albums and conceptual projects linked to his graphic research. Spending much of his time in New York from the 1990s onward, he injected American influences into his music—particularly blues and folk—while retaining a very present, rhythmic and narrative French language. Charlélie Couture also composes for film and television, creating original scores that extend his taste for dark atmospheres, slow ballads and work on the tension between spoken word and singing. His activity as a visual artist feeds his covers, scenography and certain album cycles conceived as series, constantly creating bridges between songs, drawings, paintings and photographs. A regular performer in France and abroad, Charlélie Couture continues to pursue a long-term artistic trajectory, revisiting his earlier repertoire while releasing new material that furthers the dialogue between francophone rock chanson and urban imaginaries.
