Anne Clark

Born in Croydon, South London in 1960, Anne Clark from the early 1980s developed a body of work that sits between spoken-word poetry and electronic music. Emerging from the London alternative scene, she first made her mark in independent clubs by delivering her texts over structures close to new wave, synth-pop and dark wave aesthetics. Her debut album, The Sitting Room (1982), established a formula of recitation, programmed rhythms and synthetic pads, which she refined on Joined Up Writing (1984) with producer David Harrow and on Pressure Points (1985) made with John Foxx. Over the 1990s her discography moved toward more atmospheric, introspective moods before returning to a dense, melodic songwriting on The Smallest Acts of Kindness (2008). Clark’s lyrics—focused on urban alienation, technological change, power relations and the intimate—remain central to concerts staged as spoken-word performances accompanied by different musicians over time. Very active on European stages, notably in Germany and Central Europe, Anne Clark has sustained a career defined by a constant interplay between poetry, sonic experimentation and minimalist pop forms.
