Mary Middlefield

Based in Switzerland, Mary Middlefield develops a songwriting style that sits between indie pop and alternative rock, with a prominent role for strings and a melodic tension that reflects her classical violin training, begun in childhood. She constructs songs where sometimes expansive arrangements intersect with a direct vocal and lyrics focused on the intimate, on relationships and areas of emotional friction, while staying within an accessible pop format. After her early singles, Mary Middlefield released the 2023 album Thank You Alexander, which established the balance between rock energy, a knack for choruses and a more organic instrumentation. She continued with Poetry (for the scorned and lonely), a project that extends this approach by accentuating the confessional dimension of her writing. Mary Middlefield has also played a variety of stages and formats, appearing at festivals such as Glastonbury and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and opening for bands like The Beaches, Seafret and The Grogans.
