Céline Dion

Born in Charlemagne, Quebec, Céline Dion first made her mark in francophone song in the early 1980s with a wide-ranging voice and a repertoire at the crossroads of variété, orchestral pop and adult contemporary. Early on she was accompanied by René Angélil and recorded several French-language albums before representing Switzerland at Eurovision in 1988 with “Ne partez pas sans moi,” a moment that opened the door to an international career. Her move into the anglophone market solidified with Unison in 1990, followed by Celine Dion in 1992 and The Colour of My Love in 1993, where her pop anchored in balladry assumed a more defined form. At the same time she continued her French work with D’eux (1995) and S’il suffisait d’aimer (1998), two albums associated with Jean-Jacques Goldman. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw her alternate between English- and French-language releases — from Falling into You (1996) and Let’s Talk About Love (1997) to A New Day Has Come (2002) — blending ballads, melodic pop and more contemporary arrangements. The stage then became a major component of Dion’s career, notably through her Las Vegas residencies, while she maintained an international presence with concerts, soundtracks and recordings.
