Smokin Jo

Born in London, Joanne Joseph, known as Smokin Jo, has built a career rooted in British club culture since the early 1990s. Active as a DJ and producer, Smokin Jo moves between house, deep house and techno, delivering sets that combine club pulse, house grooves and darker passages. Her trajectory began to take shape in 1990 and accelerated after a booking at the Trade club in Turnmills in 1991, which led to a residency until 1993. In 1992 she played Ibiza for the first time on the terrace of Space and that same year she was ranked number one in DJ Magazine — a distinction that remains unique for a woman in the history of that ranking. Over the years Smokin Jo has performed regularly in the UK and internationally, appearing at clubs such as Ministry of Sound, Fabric, XOYO and Printworks, and in countries including Japan, Brazil, Germany, Greece, the United States, China and Singapore. Her discography notably includes the mixes Infinite Ibiza (2001), Trust the DJ: SJ01 (2002) and Sessions with Tim Sheridan (2005). From 2002 to 2006 Smokin Jo also presented the weekly Essential Ibiza segments on BBC Radio 1.
