Alison Limerick
Born in 1959 in Stepney in east London, Alison Limerick initially trained at the London School of Contemporary Dance before devoting herself to singing during the 1980s. Her career sits at the crossroads of house, dance, soul, pop and jazz, marked by a clear, supple voice that moves between club formats and more melodic repertoire. Prior to her solo career, Alison Limerick worked as a backing or guest vocalist on several projects, notably with This Mortal Coil on Filigree & Shadow (1986) and Blood (1991), as well as with the Grand Union Orchestra and the duo Pieter Nooten–Michael Brook. She also appears on Peter Murphy's Holy Smoke. In the early 1990s she gained wider visibility with the repeatedly remixed house track "Where Love Lives", and with the album And Still I Rise (1992), which also includes "Make It on My Own". Her subsequent discography includes With a Twist (1994), Club Classics (1996) and Spirit Rising (1998). At the same time she collaborated with the James Taylor Quartet and later with Brooklyn Funk Essentials, X‑Press 2 and Lenny Fontana, while continuing to move between house, soul and jazz scenes.
