Tragedy
Born in New York, Tragedy has since the 2000s developed a project of musical misappropriation that transforms disco, pop and soft rock classics into heavy metal versions, in a deliberately theatrical and parodic register that does not limit itself to pastiche. The band, led under pseudonyms and with imagery borrowed as much from glam as from hard rock, builds a sound where massive riffs, highly identifiable choruses, and a sense of spectacle coexist with the festive spirit of the original tracks. Tragedy first drew attention on the New York live scene before broadening its audience in Europe and North America, with appearances at festivals such as Bloodstock, Summer Breeze, Motocultor, Foudrock, SXSW and Rebellion. Its discography notably includes We Rock Sweet Balls and Can Do No Wrong (2006), Humbled by Our Greatness (2010), Dark Side of the Spoon (2015) and Disco Balls to the Wall (2018), which show a formula refined over the years between covers, on-stage humor and heavily codified metal execution. Tragedy thus claims an aesthetics of collision between disco culture and hard rock codes, driven by an openly admitted taste for excess, sing-along choruses and muscular arrangements.
