Scanner

Born in Southfields, in the southwest of London, Robin Rimbaud develops under the name Scanner a body of work situated between electronic music, ambient, sonic experimentation and sound art. Active since the early 1980s, he went through cassette projects before bringing Scanner to life in the early 1990s, a period when he integrated fragments of captured communications into his compositions, an element that marks his early records as Scanner (1993), Scanner 2 (1993) and Mass Observation (1994). His aesthetic later evolves toward more atmospheric, minimalist and textured forms, where drones, discreet pulsations, electroacoustic composition and writing for image, stage or installation intersect. Scanner has developed a regular practice across albums, performances, contemporary dance, cinema, radio and the visual arts, with collaborations notably with Wayne McGregor, Stephen Vitiello or Michael Nyman, as well as work presented in institutions such as Tate Modern or the ICA in London. His discography, particularly substantial, also includes Sulphur (1995), Delivery (1997), Sound for Spaces (1998), Electronic Garden (2014), Fibolae (2017), The Signal of a Signal of a Signal (2019), An Ascent (2020), then Alchemeia (2024) and The Phenol Tapes (2024). Scanner is also a member of the band Githead, in a post-punk and electronic register distinct from his solo work.
