Alain Jean‐Marie
Born in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, in 1945, Alain Jean-Marie has built a career in which jazz constantly engages with Caribbean musical traditions. Largely self-taught, he first played at dances in Guadeloupe and then spent 1967–1970 in Montreal—a period that further rooted his language in bebop and modern jazz. Settling in Paris from 1973, he established himself on the club scene as an accompanying and conversational pianist alongside musicians such as Barney Wilen, Abbey Lincoln, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Boulou and Elios Ferré, and Patrice Caratini. His playing combines a clear touch, a strong sense of swing and phrasing nourished by biguine, gwoka and the broader Creole repertoire, which he approaches without separating from the jazz vocabulary. This approach is heard on albums such as Biguine Reflexions (1992), Gwadarama (2009), Tropical Jazz Trio (2019, with Patrice Caratini and Roger Raspail), Interplay (2020, with Diego Imbert) and Creole Promenade (2023). Alain Jean-Marie also maintains a steady practice in solo and duo formats, performing standards, original compositions and reworkings of Creole songs.
