Dirk von Lowtzow
Born in 1971 in Offenburg, Baden-Württemberg, Dirk von Lowtzow emerged in the early 1990s after moving to Hamburg, where he founded Tocotronic in 1993. As the band's singer, guitarist and principal songwriter, he is associated with the so‑called Hamburger Schule—at the intersection of indie rock, post‑punk and intellectual German-language pop—characterized by direct, often allusive lyrics and a phrasing that gives as much weight to textual tension as to melody. Alongside Tocotronic, since 2001 he has developed the project Phantom/Ghost with Thies Mynther, a duo oriented toward chamber pop with spare arrangements and melancholic atmospheres. His voice also appears on tracks by Justus Köhncke, DJ Koze, Dillon, Charlotte Brandi and Dota, and on a cover of “French Disko” recorded with the Beatsteaks for the film Tschick in 2016. Based in Berlin since 2003, Dirk von Lowtzow also works as a writer and actor, but his musical trajectory remains tied to his distinctive way of making rock, pop and the German language converse.
