Brother Ali
Born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1977 and settled in Minneapolis in the early 1990s, Brother Ali established himself in the Midwest hip-hop landscape with rap rooted in the conscious and political tradition, carried by direct writing, personal narratives, and a strong social dimension. A member of the Rhymesayers collective, he emerged at the turn of the millennium with Rites of Passage (2000), then refined his style on Shadows on the Sun (2003), between soul, boom bap, and spoken word, in a formula centered on voice, phrasing precision, and often sober productions. Brother Ali then developed a discography marked by The Undisputed Truth (2007), Us (2009) and Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color (2012), where racial questions, spirituality, social critique and intimate chronicle intersect. Converted to Islam in adolescence, also active as a speaker and activist, Brother Ali integrates this dimension into his music without dissociating it from his biographical experience. His regular collaborations with producer Ant, as well as appearances alongside artists such as Atmosphere, Jake One, Freeway, Talib Kweli or Public Enemy, place his career at the junction of indie rap, engaged hip-hop, and a U.S. scene durably tied to Minneapolis. After All the Beauty in This Whole Life (2017) and Secrets & Escapes (2019), Brother Ali released Love & Service in 2024.
