Albert Lee

Born in Lingen, Herefordshire, in 1943 and raised in Blackheath in southeast London, Albert Lee developed from the late 1950s a guitar style shaped by rock and roll, R&B and American country. After playing in several British bands, he first attracted attention with Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds and later with Heads Hands & Feet, a group active in the early 1970s on the English rock and country‑rock scene. Settling in Los Angeles in 1974, Lee worked extensively as a session musician and played notably with The Crickets before joining Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band in 1976, at the crossroads of country, rock and Americana. Between 1978 and the early 1980s he accompanied Eric Clapton on stage and in the studio, and in 1983 he served as musical director for the Everly Brothers’ reunion concert, with whom he maintained a long‑term collaboration. His solo discography includes Hiding (1979), Albert Lee (1982), Speechless (1986), Heartbreak Hill (2003), Road Runner (2006), Highwayman (2014), Gypsy Man – A Tribute To Buddy Holly (2019) and Lay It Down (2024). In his own projects as well as with Hogan’s Heroes, Albert Lee combines rhythmic precision, rapid phrasing, rockabilly swing and the melodic sensibility inherited from country.
