Adriana Calcanhotto

Born in Porto Alegre, in southern Brazil, Adriana Calcanhotto has since the late 1980s developed a body of work situated between MPB, Brazilian pop, samba, and bossa nova, with a marked taste for writing, acoustic textures, and the dialogue between song and poetry. After early performances in Porto Alegre's bars, she published Enguiço in 1990, then more clearly asserted her universe with Senhas in 1992 and A Fábrica do Poema in 1994, where attention to lyrics, reinvented renditions, and a pared-down presentation already appear. Calcanhotto continued this trajectory with Maritmo in 1998, Publico in 2000, and Cantada in 2002, alternating studio albums with live performances in voice and guitar, a central format in her career. In 2004 she opened a branch aimed at younger audiences under the name Adriana Partimpim, extended by Partimpim Dois in 2009 and Partimpim Tlês in 2012. Her discography then evolved between homage to samba with O Micróbio do Samba in 2011, work around Lupicínio Rodrigues' repertoire on Loucura in 2015, and a maritime trilogy completed by Maré in 2008 and then Margem in 2019. Based between Brazil and Portugal, where she also taught at Coimbra University, Adriana Calcanhotto released Só in 2020 and then Errante in 2023, confirming a sober, mobile writing attentive to the rhythms of language as well as to melodic nuances.
