Mumiy Troll

Formed in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East in the early 1980s around singer-songwriter Ilya Lagutenko, Mumiy Troll gradually established itself on the Russian rock scene by developing a sound that blends pop rock, new wave and electronic touches. After an initial period of underground activity during the Soviet era, Mumiy Troll re-emerged in the mid-1990s, relocated to Moscow and gained visibility thanks to an aesthetic the band itself has called “rockapops,” characterized by a highly recognizable voice, melodic bass lines and a taste for immediate, catchy choruses. The 1997 album Morskaya marked an important milestone, opening the way to major stages and to national and later international touring. Operating as a flexible lineup centered on Lagutenko, the group then increased its concerts across the post‑Soviet space, represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2001 and performed at various festivals in Europe, Asia and North America. Mumiy Troll’s discography alternates between Russian recordings and English-language projects, with a sustained interest in melodic rock—sometimes tinged with indie pop—subtle synths and danceable rhythms, while retaining a strong connection to the maritime and port imagery of Vladivostok.
