Today Is Ok - Ali Cherri

A French soldier, Lafleur, traverses a day of national celebration in which the weight of military duty silently crushes him. Presented at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Ali Cherri's La Sentinelle, with Nahuel Perez Biscayart and Eric Cantona, stages the remnants of a world long gone, frozen in a setting where words resonate like hollow echoes. Between nocturnal escapades and fleeting encounters, notably with a performer in a cabaret bar, Lafleur wanders at the boundary between reality and dream.

Shown at the Palais de Tokyo, the film extends into an exhibition where cinema spills beyond the screen to occupy the space. Sets, sculptures and installations pursue the questions that traverse the work: the figure of the guardian, the mechanisms of preparation for conflict, and the effects of war on bodies and imaginaries. Conceived as artificial constructions close to theater or painting, the exhibited spaces blur the lines between fiction and reality.

At the heart of the exhibition, a monumental sculpture inspired by military monuments distorts the codes of heroism to reveal the vulnerability of soldiers. Between architecture and staging, Ali Cherri explores the narratives that shape the experience of warfare and the forms of flight, resistance, or abandonment that they enable.
