La Source De La Loire Et Autres Films - Rose Lowder

Rose Lowder's cinema is a cinema of attention: attention to 'nothing extraordinary', as she puts it in the title of one of her films, but also attention to detail and to reality seen up close. The fact that her films do not offer narration or linear time reinforces this necessary attention, this work of the eye that she suggests without imposing it.

For more than 50 years, Rose Lowder has been filming nature and what is near to it by weaving images inside her 16mm Bolex camera. A one-minute film consists of 1,440 distinct frames, and a shot by Rose Lowder can sometimes last well under a second, producing on the retina superpositions that are anything but accidental.

The exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo presents her most recent films and screens La Source de la Loire on film, the production years of which (2019-2021) indicate that Rose Lowder visited three consecutive springs to record and transfigure, in the calm of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, the tremors of a small brook that is the source of France's longest river.

The film is accompanied by twenty one-minute shorts arranged into 'bouquets', filmed on properties in the south of France and northern Italy, where biodiversity is cultivated and preserved.
