Info
If it stays hard to pin down Macy Gray, it’s because her voice does half the work: that grainy, instantly recognizable timbre that made On How Life Is a late-90s landmark, somewhere between soul, R&B and pop writing that doesn’t over-explain itself. Over the years, she’s kept moving the lines, adding funkier grooves, flirting with rock and hip-hop touches on records like The Id or The Trouble with Being Myself, then switching angles with bigger, more open productions on Big and The Sellout.
She also knows how to step aside from her own songs: the covers project Covered, a detour through Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book, and later a more stripped, jazz-leaning approach on Stripped, where the phrasing and the band feel closer to a live room than a studio polish. More recently, The Reset with The California Jet Club brought a collective, contemporary soul sound into the mix. She plays EartH in London on 6 November 2026 for a set that draws from these different chapters, led by a singer who’s always sounded like herself.
