Greg Mendez has always been a sober singer-songwriter: restraint and simplicity are his weapons, the heart of his songs crystallizing into simple, piercing truths. On Beauty Land, his new album and first LP on Dead Oceans, we are guided by an ironic yet indulgent narrator, an outsider who has learned to find a balance between cynicism and hope. These songs are modest without being self-pitying, altars to imperfection carefully built, channeled through pop melodies, bright yet urgent guitars, and a voice that aspires to the innocence of a choirboy.
Most of Beauty Land was recorded directly to tape, almost entirely solo, in Greg Mendez's improvised Philadelphia studio, a small room devoid of natural light. This is his first full album since his self-titled debut, released in 2023, which gradually found success after fifteen years spent writing and recording music in relative obscurity, between Philadelphia and New York. Beauty Land picks up where we left off, exploring the depths of grief, love, and dependence, but its intense and serene clarity reveals Greg Mendez in his craft as a songwriter.
