Info

Subhumans are among the formative names of the UK punk and anarcho-punk wave of the early 80s. Between 1980 and 1985, the band developed a sound that fused the raw energy of the Sex Pistols or The Damned with unexpectedly complex structures—drawing on pre-punk influences such as King Crimson or Frank Zappa. At the center is Dick Lucas: his lyrics are political, direct, and allergic to conformity, war, religion, and social control, closely aligned with the DIY ethos of the scene around Crass, Conflict, or Flux of Pink Indians.

From the early EPs and the debut album The Day the Country Died, it quickly became a touchstone, before Subhumans founded their own Bluurg Records label in 1983 and continued on their path independently. After the split in 1985, Lucas moved on to Culture Shock and then to Citizen Fish, before Subhumans reformed in the late 1990s and have since returned to live performances.

On 20 October 2026, Subhumans will be on stage at Hafenklang in Hamburg.
