Horsegirl—the New York and Chicago-born trio of best friends Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece—has released its second album, Phonetics On and On, on Matador Records. Produced by Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago, the band’s original and sonic home, Phonetics On and On is an exploration of the boundaries between pop, minimalism, and playful experimentation.
It's hard to imagine any of these songs written by anyone other than Nora, Penelope, and Gigi. Horsegirl write with unexpected honesty, guiding us through scenes of girlhood and adolescence. These are moments from their lives. Horsegirl is a band of best friends; their closeness is visible in their eyes. This affection is palpable in Phonetics On and On, while gentleness echoes throughout the recording.
