Whitney is, first and foremost, the Chicago meeting between Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, two musicians who had already pursued other indie ventures before building this project that is at once very duo-centered in its writing and much more expansive on stage. Their calling card: a softly rendered falsetto, clear guitars, a touch of melancholy, and arrangements often threaded with brass—somewhere between indie rock, folk, and hushed soul.
Since Light Upon the Lake (2016), the band has refined its taste for simple, luminous songs, extended the intimate mood on Forever Turned Around (2019), then took a detour into covers with Candid (2020), a way of showing their knack for appropriation without overdoing it. With Spark (2022), Whitney shifts the focus somewhat toward a broader pop, while preserving that warm grain and direct songwriting.
