If you’re following the new wave of UK jazz, Ezra Collective are right in the thick of it. Born out of London’s Tomorrow’s Warriors scene, the quintet brings together drummer Femi Koleoso, bassist TJ Koleoso, keys player Joe Armon-Jones, trumpeter Ife Ogunjobi and saxophonist James Mollison. Their sound moves fast and stays grounded in the groove: contemporary jazz that happily blends afrobeat, hip-hop, soul, dub, reggae and Caribbean touches, switching between tight instrumentals and more open, vocal-friendly formats.
After early EPs like Chapter 7 and Juan Pablo: The Philosopher, they widened the scope with You Can’t Steal My Joy, then kept pushing on Where I’m Meant to Be, the Mercury Prize-winning record that cemented their place in the UK jazz resurgence. More recently, Dance, No One’s Watching keeps that same collective energy front and centre.
