Soul Asylum

Soul Asylum takes over Midway Music Hall in Edmonton on August 26, 2026. Formed in Minneapolis in the early ’80s, the band grew out of the Twin Cities’ independent scene, blending punk grit, power-pop hooks and country-tinged alt rock. First known for relentless club shows and early Twin/Tone albums, they sharpened their writing across A&M years before breaking through with Grave Dancers Union and Runaway Train, a song that marked an entire decade. Since then, Soul Asylum has kept moving, from Let Your Dim Light Shine to recent chapters like Hurry Up and Wait and 2024’s Slowly but Shirley.

On stage, expect a set that threads their timeline without nostalgia overload: jagged early cuts, the melodic surge of the ’90s, and newer songs that carry the same restless pulse. Dave Pirner still leads the charge, now alongside Michael Bland, Ryan Smith and Jeremy Tappero, a lineup that plays the catalog with clarity and drive. It’s Soul Asylum in present tense, drawing a straight line from basement shows to radio staples and back to the raw nerve that started it all.
