Alma Rechtman

Alma Rechtman is a singer-songwriter who sings of her loves, her hopes, her monsters and her joys in intimate songs. Born into a musical family steeped in jazz and blues, she took up several instruments at an early age: guitar with her father, percussion with her godmother, and piano with her mother. She began writing songs during the lockdown, completed her theatre studies, then went busking in the streets of Paris. During her musical wanderings she was noticed by Sofar and, at the same time, joined the Bobigny jazz conservatory. At Sofar evenings, an attentive audience gradually gathered around her; by word of mouth, her name circulated through the small networks of emerging artists. A live session then marked her first step into the world of music.

A filmed session at La Chapelle Reille around the farewell song “Quand tu reviendras” followed. Her project is a love letter to soul, jazz, folk and to the women who embody them. It is between silences and breaths that the phrases come to life and unfold. In her notebooks she records secrets and dead-ends that she sets to music. Her songs, both raw and delicate, are exposed poems. Her husky voice, sometimes on the verge of breaking, carries lyrics that speak of love, abandonment, solitude, and also a gentle anger. Between pop, soul, folk and poetry, her style navigates with the text as its common thread — a sensitive, deeply felt writing that sometimes skirts her darkest zones.
