Info

On 9 October 2026, O2 Academy Liverpool hosts Dodgy and The Icicle Works for a meeting of two British guitar lineages. Formed in Hounslow in 1990, Dodgy sharpened a melodic rock leaning on power pop, alternative rock and bright, ringing guitars. The run of The Dodgy Album, Homegrown and Free Peace Sweet set out a style built on direct songs and carefully shaped choruses, with Staying Out for the Summer, Good Enough and If You’re Thinking of Me marking the era. After a pause in the late 1990s, the original trio regrouped in 2007 and later returned to record Stand Upright in a Cool Place and What Are We Fighting For, now often expanding on stage with Stuart Thoy on bass.

From Liverpool’s early-80s independent scene, The Icicle Works formed around Ian McNabb with Chris Layhe and Chris Sharrock. Their sound blends post-punk and new wave urgency with neo-psychedelic colour and melodic pull: clear guitars, pop-forward refrains, and a slightly darker undertow. The first singles, Nirvana and Love Is a Wonderful Colour, framed the self-titled debut in 1984, followed by If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song, Blind and Permanent Damage. Across changing line-ups, McNabb has remained the axis, steering songs that move between jangling drive and roomier, acoustic-leaning passages.
