Info
Christopher Cross plays The Glasshouse - International Centre for Music in Gateshead on 15 May 2026. The Texas-born singer-songwriter helped define the soft rock and adult contemporary sound at the turn of the 1980s with smooth, melodic writing often tagged as yacht rock. His 1979 debut brought Ride Like the Wind and Sailing, followed by the theme from the film Arthur in 1981 written with Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. The albums Another Page and Every Turn of the World extended his pop craft, while Back of My Mind and Rendezvous leaned into polished arrangements and gentle harmonies. Since Walking in Avalon, then Doctor Faith, Secret Ladder and Take Me As I Am, he has pursued songwriting that moves between ballads, West Coast pop and light jazz touches. On stage, he draws across decades, from early radio staples to recent songs.
Also appearing, Chris Difford, cofounder of Squeeze and the lyrical half of the Difford-Tilbrook duo. Known for sharp, everyday storytelling and dry observation, he penned classics like Up the Junction, Cool for Cats, Tempted and Black Coffee in Bed. Alongside his work with Squeeze, his solo records favour a more stripped, acoustic-leaning approach, from I Didn’t Get Where I Am to The Last Temptation of Chris and beyond. Live, he reconnects with that intimate songwriting and the narratives that run through his catalogue.
