Info

Mouth of the Tyne Festival presents James at Tynemouth Priory and Castle, Tynemouth, on 12 July 2026. Formed in 1982 in south Manchester, the band grew from post-punk beginnings into a wide-ranging indie outfit led by Tim Booth and bassist Jim Glennie, with key contributions from Larry Gott, Saul Davies, Mark Hunter, Andy Diagram and David Baynton-Power. After early releases on Factory and the first albums Stutter and Strip-mine, James reached a new phase with Gold Mother and Seven, then shifted again through a collaboration with Brian Eno on Laid and Wah Wah that opened up more exploratory pop-rock ideas. The path that followed brought Whiplash, Millionaires and Pleased to Meet You, a pause, then a return in 2007 and a steady run of records: Hey Ma, La Petite Mort, Girl at the End of the World, Living in Extraordinary Times, All the Colours of You, the orchestral Be Opened by the Wonderful, and Yummy in 2024. On stage, expect a set spanning these eras, with guitars, keys, violin and trumpet shaping melodic choruses.
