Sebastian Marx returns to the stage with a new work-in-progress show, picking up where you’d expect: observing everyday life, cultural misunderstandings and that slight disconnect between French norms and American reflexes. After twenty years spent “analyzing” France, he’s arrived at a theory that seems simple at first glance: there are only six types of French people. The question remains where you fit, where he places himself, and whether putting people into boxes isn’t, at bottom, just another box.
Between France and the United States, Paris and “the rest,” religion and atheism, fatherhood and childhood, Sebastian Marx relates this constant tug-of-war and the difficulty of finding one’s place, with direct, precise stand-up that’s familiar enough for people to recognize themselves.
