GWAR, formed in Richmond in 1984 out of the Slave Pit collective, still fuses thrash, heavy metal and hardcore grit with grotesque sci‑fi costumes and deadpan satire. On stage, armor, creatures and skits orbit around tight, bulldozing riffs that trace a line from Hell-O and Scumdogs of the Universe to The Blood of Gods and The New Dark Ages. Since 2014, Michael Bishop (aka Blöthar) leads the charge, keeping the band’s mix of black humor and blunt, high-impact metal very much alive. Expect a loud, highly visual show that treats provocation as part of the songwriting. Catch them at Midway Music Hall in Edmonton on November 28, 2026.
Also on the bill, Cleveland’s Midnight, the long-running project steered by Athenar. Sitting at the crossroads of first-wave black metal, speed metal and punk, Midnight fires off short, ripping tracks with raw guitars and a straight-ahead pulse. From Satanic Royalty to Let There Be Witchery, the band sticks to a lean, unpolished sound built for sweat and movement. Live, Athenar fronts a full lineup that plays fast and direct, stacking riffs and choruses designed for headbanging without frills.
